Murchison falls national park.
Murchison falls national park is situated at the end of Albertine Rift valley and was formerly known as kabalenga national park in western part of Uganda. The park is the first largest and oldest park covering an area of 3983sqkm and taking about 305 km from Kampala to Masindi district. Murchison falls national park is a home of 76 mammals including big five animals like elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards, Rhinos, giraffes, warthogs, water bucks, bush bucks and 451 bird species like long horned billed bird, white egrets, kingfishers, wagtail, pin tailed whydah, vultures, owl and many more. The park is also famously known for having the most powerful falls in the whole world that were named by Sir Samuel Baker the explorer and his wife Florence Baker.
The park can be accessed by road transport and air transport from kampala. By air transport, visitors will use a flight from kajjasi or Entebbe International airport to either pakuba airstrip or chobe airstrip taking about an hour to the park.
However, by road transport, visitors access the park using private or public vehicles or buses taking about 5 hours using to reach the park passing via Masindi the north western part to the park or visitors may use South western part to enter to the park taking about 7 hours.
Queen Elizabeth national park.
Queen Elizabeth national park is the second largest and oldest park in Uganda covering an area of 1978sqkm in western part of Uganda. The park is famously known for harboring 95 mammals like elephants, buffalos, warthogs, Uganda kobs, water bucks, bush bucks, mongoose, and over 6000 bird species like long horned billed bird, pin tailed whydah, great blue turacos, ring necked bird, flamingos, wagtail, bee- eater, and many more. The park is the best destination for nature walks and culture tours since the park is located in about 4 districts like kamwenge, Rukungiri, kasese district, Rubizi, Kanungu district and many more.
Kibale national park.
Kibale national park is located in western part of Uganda and famously known as a home of 13 primates like chimpanzees, red tailed monkeys, baboons, vervet monkeys, black and white monkeys, various bird species like handsome francolin, grey crowned crane, long horned billed bird, white egrets, vultures, wagtail, pin tailed whydah, bee- eaters, great blue turaco, and many more. The park is best destination for nature walk and culture since it is surrounded by Batoro natives and bakiga migrates.
The park covers an area of 776 sq km and can be accessed by either road transport and air transport. By road transport, kibale national park can be accessed using private 0r public vehicles and buses passing via mupende-Fort Portal route taking about 5 hours to the park. However, the park can also be spotted using Masaka-Mbarara route then kasese district-Fort portal then kibale national park. Although the journey seems to long, it is worthy it due to beautiful sceneries spotted along the way like kazinga channel, queen Elizabeth national park, Lake Mburo national park, Equator and many more.
Lake Mburo national park.
Lake Mburo is the second smallest park in Uganda covering 370sqkm from mgahinga park and lies in western part of Uganda. The park can be accessed along the Masaka -Mbarara high way taking about 3-4 hours from Kampala using private or public vehicles for about 260sqkm. The park is a home for about 68 mammals like zebras, giraffes, leopard, warthogs, Uganda kobs, buffalos, elephants, bush bucks, and about 350 bird species like grey crowned crane, white egrets, owl, wagtail, handsome Francolin, pin tailed whydah, vulture and many more.
Semuliki national park.
Semuliki national park is the oldest park located in Bundibugyo District in the Western Region of Uganda. The park lies between kibale national park and Queen Elizabeth national park which are famously known in western part neighboring Congo. Semuliki national park is the best destination for about 60 mammals like bay duiker, Beecroft’s Anomalure, flying squirrels, bush babies, bush pigs, civets, Dwarf Antelope, elephants, fruit bats, Fire-footed Rope squirrel, forest buffalos, pygmy hippos, leopards and birding paradise like Blue-headed Crested Flycatcher, Capuchin Babbler, , Dwarf Honey guide, Forest Ground Thrush, , orange weaver, Purple-breasted Sunbird, Sassi’s Olive Greenbul and White-tailed Hornbill . The park is well known for having sempaya hot spring and female hot spring however the forest inhabits primates like chimpanzees, red tailed monkeys, vervet monkey, black and white monkeys and may more.
Mount Rwenzori national park.
Mount Rwenzori national park lies in western part of Uganda neighboring Congo boarders. The park is commonly known for having the second highest peak in Africa from Mount Kilimanjaro and besides mount Rwenzori, the park is called mountains of the moon. The park is rich in bio diversity harboring various70 mammals and 217 bird species which are spotted in varying vegetation altitudes. The park is also best in mountain climbing, hiking, nature walk and culture with the help of guides.
It takes about 7 hours to reach Mount Rwenzori national park passing via mupende-Fort portal route using private or public vehicles however visitors passing via masaka -Mbarara route taking about 8-9 hours. Visitors can still access the park using air transport from Entebbe International airport to Kasese airstrip taking about 2 hours.
Mount Elgon national park.
Mount Elgon national park lies in Eastern part of Uganda as the oldest and largest solitary, volcanic mountain in East Africa. The park boarders Uganda- kenya as a UNESCO world heritage, protected and managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority. Mount Elgon national park is a home to Mammals like elephants and bird species however is best destination for mountain climbing since mt Elgon has the highest peak of wagagai which is about 4321m above the seas level.
Bwindi Impenetrable national park.
Bwindi Impenetrable national park is located in south western part of Uganda and famously known for habiting Uganda gorillas. The park lies at the boarder of Rwanda and Congo near Virunga conservation area. The park has four sectors which are Ruhija, Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga that inhabits about 16 gorilla families that total up to 400 individuals and one other gorilla family Nyakagezi in mgahinga national park making it 17 gorilla families in Uganda.
Mgahinga national park.
Mgahinga national park is the smalled park in Uganda and lies in Virunga conservation area with Virunga national park in Congo and Volcano national park in Rwanda. The park lies in south western part of Uganda neighboring Bwindi Impenetrable national park and is the best destination for golden monkeys and mountain gorillas. Virunga conservation area with Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Park inhabits over 1063 individuals in the whole world however Uganda inhabits half of individuals and the park is a bird paradise for bird lovers.
Kidepo valley national park.
Kidepo valley national park lies in north eastern part of Uganda in kaabong district. The park covers an area of 1442sqkm and best destination of various mammals and bird species. Kidepo valley national park is isolated and remote national park consists of mainly rugged Savannah, hills and great valleys that are surrounded by the Morungole Mountains. The park is best destination for game drive for about 76 mammals like Maneless Zebras, the ostrich, the orx, cheetahs and wild dogs elephants. Buffalos, lions, giraffes and 476 bird species. The game drive takes about 2-3 hours and despite being a remote area, the visitors will take long time searching for mammals in the park.
