3 Days Congo Nyiragongo Hike
Explore the most dangerous active volcano in the world, one of the eight Virungas in Uganda, Rwanda, and the D R Congo with multiple breathtaking sceneries.
Our 3 days Nyiragongo hike package will offer an opportunity to experience the active volcano with a burning lava lake on its summit. The Nyiragongo volcano is situated in the eastern part of D R Congo. It’s the world’s most dangerous active volcano that occupies the 8 Virungas volcanoes found in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. On reaching its summit, it’s a beauty to behold with rewarding sceneries that cover the entire area. It is located within the Virunga national park, the oldest national park in Africa with the most diversity. A variety of wildlife inhabits the park including animals, birds primates, vegetation cover, lakes and rivers, and mountains.
Nyiragongo volcano is the most popular active volcano with massive eruptions following its bordering Nyamuragira volcano. Of recent mountain, Nyiragongo had a mild eruption that left a number of resources destroyed surrounding the volcano bass area. But despite the sneaking danger, it remains the active volcano that is open for tourism activities in DR Congo throughout the year although of recent all the hiking activities surrounding Nyiragongo volcano are currently closed due to its recent eruption until further notice.
Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Congo
You will be picked up by our driver guide from the airport or from the hotel to Kigali city for a tour, you will see the presidential former palace now a museum, the1994 genocide memorial site after proceeding to Congo passing via Lake Kivu the largest water body to Goma town. You will have lunch at the nearby hotel after your driver will clear with the immigration at the border point before crossing to Congo. The Virungas national park team will welcome and transfer you to your hotel/lodge. Dinner and overnight at Mikeno lodge, Kikumba tented camp, and Bukima lodge options.
Day 2: Hike Nyiragongo volcano.
Have breakfast in the morning and transfer to Kibatsi, the hiking starting point for briefing .here you will other hikers ready to kale the journey to the top of the volcano. Remember to hire porters to help carry the excessive luggage because it’s a tough hike up to the summit
On the hike towards the summit, you will find forests and green vegetation occupying the lower slopes, these act as habitant to various animals and birdlife, and other primates. You will be able to spot different monkey species, if lucky enough you can see even the chimpanzees but reaching the top most of the vegetation is destroyed as a result of the eruption, and hot magma circulated around the entire area, this allows you to view the beautiful scenery of the park and across its border including lake Kivu, Rwenzori mountains, Virungas volcanoes, and the nearby Goma town.
It takes about 4-6 hours to reach the Nyiragongo summit depending on your physical fitness and your entire group members but it’s worth every step taken though you pass through well-demarcated trails that are navigable to hike up to the top. Expect to reach the top in the evening and, you will get a chance to view the largest lava lake formed in a spider web-like shape. Your dinner and overnight will be at the lava lake on Nyiragongo summit shelters.
Day 3: Descend and transfer back to Kigali
You will have breakfast from the shelters perched on top of the volcano prepared by the porters and after begin to descend to the base. You will have another chance to view the amazing landscape case you didn’t have the chance to view when ascending to the top. Reaching the base you will find your driver waiting for you and transfer back to the border cross to Rwanda. Here you will need to pay for another visa pass to cross to Rwanda. Upon arrival in Kigali, you can decide to do the other Kigali city tour to other fascinating places before dropping off at the hotel or the airport to catch your flight for departure.
