Lake Mburo National Park is located in the western part of Uganda and is dominated by acacia species and open savannah grasslands that are greatly reduced by the ever-increasing woodlands. The park is home to 68 mammal species like Impala, eland, klipspringer, bushbuck, waterbuck, topi, bohor reedbuck, buffalo, warthog, hippo, Leopard, hyena, jackal, genet, African civet, serval and 350 bird species like Black-collared barbet, bare-faced go-away bird, blue-breasted, kingfisher, shoebill stork, African finfoot, and papyrus yellow warbler.
What to do while at the camp?
Game drive.
Despite the fact that the Tented Montana camp is located at the edge of the park, it is the best destination for a game drive. The game drive takes 2-3 hours using 4WD vehicles and can be either early morning or evening to spot early racers and glaciers. The park inhabits 68 mammal species like Impala, eland, klipspringer, bushbuck, waterbuck, topi, bohor reedbuck, buffalo, warthog, hippo, Leopard, hyena, jackal, genet, African, and many more.
Bird watching
Lake Mburo National Park is a birding paradise for birders. The camp is home to 350 bird species, which are spotted during game drives and some during nature walks. These bird species include bare-faced go-away birds, blue-breasted, kingfishers, shoebill storks, African finfoot, papyrus yellow warblers, and many more. Birders are advised to pack binoculars, cameras, comfortable boots, raincoats, water &snacks, and many more.
Nature walk
Lake Mburo National Park is the best destination for nature walks. The activity involves footing with the help of guides to either local communities or into the park to search various mammal species. Nature walks take 2-3 hours and can be in the morning, afternoon, or evening, depending on the visitor’s itinerary. While at the tented Mantana camp, visitors may walk into the park where they will spot buffalos, elephants, giraffes, waterbucks, and many more.
Culture encounters
Despite the fact that Lake Mburo National Park lies in the Ankole tribe, who are pastoralists. The tented camp is the best destination for cultural encounters because it neighbors local communities where rare cattle and milk cows are present. Visitors may learn how to cook local meals, visit local doctors who use herbs as medicine, do traditional dances, and entertain visitors. Cultural encounters always make visitors feel familiar with African culture.
How to access the park?
Lake Mburo National Park can be used for road or air transport. By road transport, visitors may use private or public vehicles to reach the park, which takes approximately 5 hours. Visitors may use the Kampala- Masaka – Mbarara route, which is worth the journey because the equator is spotted along the way, local communities, and many more.
By air transport, visitors may fly from kajjassi or Entebbe International Airport, which takes about 40 minutes to Mbarara airstrip. From the airstrip, visitors drive for about 30 minutes to the park.
What is the best time to visit the tented Mantana camp?
Although the camp can be visited annually, there is always the best time to visit. Visitors exploring Uganda will experience the wet and dry seasons; however, the dry season is always the busiest at the camp because the tents are always full, so it is advisable to book in time to avoid inconveniences. Whereas the wet season is described as the low season, it is thus easy to find rooms at the tented Montana camp; however, it is also advisable to book on time.
