Visit Uganda’s Historical Sites.

Uganda the pearl of Africa is a landlocked country in East Africa renowned for its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and with amazing cultural encounters. Uganda has amazing cultural heritage site which consists of monuments (such as architectural works, monumental sculptures, or inscriptions), groups of buildings, and sites (including archaeological sites).  These sites are led by UNESCO heritage sites which was established in 1972.

Uganda museum is the oldest museum in East Africa located in the heart of Kampala city in Uganda. The museum has a number of galleries: Ethnography, Natural History, Traditional Music, Science and Industry, and Early History

Although Uganda museum is now under renovation, the site is highly visited due to amazing history especially ethnography section holds more than 100,000 object of historical and cultural value, where as traditional music displays a comprehensive collection of musical instruments from East Africa, which grew from the collection originally established by Dr Klaus Wachsmann in 1948. According to the major groups of music instruments, the instruments are arranged drums, percussion, wind and string instruments.

Kasubi tombs is located in the heart of Kampala the capital city of Uganda. Historically the site is set up in grass thatched architecture that is used as the burial grounds for four kabakas (kings of Buganda) and other members of the Baganda royal family. Kasubi tombs is about 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) northwest of the city center and the site is one of 31 royal tombs across the Buganda kingdom since the kingdom was founded in the 13th century.

While at Kasubi tombs, visitors can visit “bajjabukula” which is the entrance of the sacred forest where ancestral spirits of Buganda believed to dwell. The place is only visited by the wives of the dead and few members of royal family and many more rituals stories will be told to visitors.

Nyero rock painting site is located in eastern Uganda in Kumi District, 8 km (5.0 mi) west of Kumi town, about 250 km (155.3 mi) from the capital city Kampala. This is a small rock shelter formed by a low overhanging rock perched above three supporting rocks. On the outer edge of the overhang are six sets of concentric circles in white, together with paintings in the shape of ‘acacia pods.’

The sites at Nyero are believed locally to have been sacred ancestral places where, in the past, people would have travelled long distances to make offerings of food, beer and money in times of drought, misfortune and for child birth. Nyero was also regarded as a magical place where rain ceremonies were held. Oral histories have recorded strong attachments to the site and individual and community prayers were held seasonally. The antiquity of the images and their association with long-forgotten peoples may serve to enhance Nyero as a special and sacred place for local communities.

The rock paintings are easily accessible from the gravel road between Kumi and Ngora, appr. 1 km west of Nyero. An entrance fee is collected and a guided tour is provided at the entrance gate (opened daily).

Uganda martyrs shrine is a Catholic pilgrimage site commemorating the martyrdom of 45 Ugandan converts in 1886. The shrine, a poignant symbol of faith and sacrifice, bears witness to the steadfast devotion of those who endured persecution for their beliefs. Pilgrims from across the globe converge on Namugongo, creating a sacred atmosphere that transcends time.

On 3rd June 1886, 37 of them were killed and burnt at Namugongo which was Buganda’s traditional sacrifice center. That’s why every 3rd of June all Christians in the world gather at Namugongo to remember the death of those Christians heroes.

Speke memorial monument.

Speke memorial monument is located in Jinja, Uganda as the historical landmark. The name speke was derived from the British explorer John Hanning Speke, who was the first European to reach the source of the Nile River. The monument is impressive monument not only commemorates Speke’s adventurous spirit but also offers visitors a unique opportunity to delve into Uganda’s rich cultural heritage. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, the monument is a perfect spot for leisurely strolls and is ideal for picnics, making it a favorite destination for both locals and tourists alike.

Visitors may access it by public or private vehicles taking about 2-3 hours from Kampala the capital city.

Amabere ga nyinamwiru

Amabere ga nyinamwiru are located in fort portal which are 7km away from the city of fort portal. These are caves historically amabere ga nyinamwiru means breasts of Nyinamwiru. The Nyinamwiru was a princess who failed to obey her father’s rules who was a king Bakuku. She disobeyed to marry the man the father chose for her and the father decided to punish her by cutting her breast.

While on Ugandasafari, visitors will visit the Nyakasura caves will make one witness the breast like features hanging under the roof of the caves dripping a whitish substance. Locals believe that these arethe breasts of Nyinamwiru dropping.

Fort patiko

Fort Patiko is known as Baker’s fort which was a military fort built by Samuel Baker in Patiko, Uganda. Fort Patiko is located in northern part of Uganda in Ajulu parish, Patiko sub-county, Aswa County in Gulu district. Fort Patiko is one of the remaining old structures portraying the British colonial era and slavery in Uganda and east Africa.

Despite the fact that this place witnessed an unpleasant background to the humanity of the slave trade, it offers a fell ton explore part of its history that dates back in days of 19th centuary.

Ttanda pits

Ttanda pits are in mityana along mupende-fort portal route in Uganda. They are said to be caused by Walumbe, a central character in the creation myth of Kintu. Walumbe is a personification of death, and when he is being forced to return to heaven, he stomps on the ground, opening up pits to hide in. According to Christopher Wrigley, he said pits are “actually old iron-workings but thought of as entrances to the land of death.

Nakayima tree shrine.

Nakayima tree shrine is located in mupende in Uganda as the oldest trees in Uganda with its age over 350 years. The nakayima tree shrine is commonly known as Nakayima tree shrine, Nakayima witch tree, Bachwezi witch tree, Mubende’s Witch Tree or Embuga ya Nakayima, is an ancient historical tree and cultural heritage site. The place is highly visited by locals who brief in spirits however foreigners visit the place to know the history of the tree. s
