It was double blessing for Uganda tourism industry as two rhinos gave birth on April 12, 2023 increasing the crash of rhinos at Ziwa rhino sanctuary to 35 individuals. In 1980s Uganda had the highest number of rhinos in Ajai game reserve but due to the wars and poaching for their ivory they went into extinct.
Rhinos produce one calf every after four years and it can only let the go of the calf on its own after four years when it’s pregnant and takes about 16 months to give birth. The gestation period of a rhino is one year and 4 month and produces 1 calf.
Around 2005, efforts to re- introduce rhinos in Uganda started with the help from rhino fund Uganda and Uganda wildlife authority, a very favorable breeding grounds was selected in Nakasongola district now called the Ziwa rhino sanctuary. The sanctuary populates about
A total of 6 both white and black rhino were introduce to the country and they kick started the sanctuary; two were taken to the Entebbe zoo the current wildlife education center. The four that kicked started the sanctuary have increased in number, thanks to rhino fund Uganda , ministry of tourism , Uganda wild life authority and visitors. On April 12th, 2023 it was a double blessing for the Uganda tourism industry as the two rhinos gave birth to two healthy calves which have increased the number of the crash of rhinos in the sanctuary to 35.
There are a lot of tourism activities at the sanctuary where visitors or tourists can engage .The activities at the ziwa rhino sanctuary include rhino foot tracking , birding , canoeing among other activities , there are accommodation around the sanctuary.
